Port Elliot is an idyllic lifestyle destination for some. Located around 80 kilometres south-east of Adelaide, it’s on the eastern tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula. In the 1850s, it was well-known as a maritime port; today, it is a vacation spot for people seeking a high-quality of life.

In 1851 Port Elliot was named a port – a safe sea port for all the trade that occurred along the Murray River. It was named after Charles Elliot who was a ‘British naval officer, diplomat, and colonial administrator’, who was Governor of Bermuda.
Charles was also the friend of Sir Henry Young, who was Governor of South Australia at the time.
It is thought that the area may have been known as Witengangool, as the aboriginal name for the area may have been “Witengangool”
Horseshoe Bay is a popular spot for holiday makers and locals who like to swim, sit and stroll along the beach. Some people travel to Port Elliot for a day, others stay longer.
The population of Port Elliot (2021 ABS Census) was 2251. The median age is 61 years, which is higher than other coastal areas around Australia. For example, median ages of these areas: Torquay, Victoria: (39), Margaret River (42), Noosa (48), Port Macquarie (50).
Port Elliot has a village feel with historic buildings. There’s a sense of community. It’s a place to visit or live that has clean beaches. It’s a beautiful coastal village.
