Previously Cindy owned a caravan park on the Yorke Peninsula and just before establishing that business, she had worked for 5 years in the weight loss and fitness industry, for ladies.
Shane was a truck driver for 30 years and wanted a career change
How long since you established Segway Sensation SA?
The first location at Seppeltsfield opened on 1st November 2014. So it has been in operation for 4 years now with the 2nd location opening 2 years ago.
Why did you established Segway Sensation SA?
The inspiration to begin in a Segway tour business came from Cindy’s experience of taking a guided Segway tour in Sydney in 2014. While reluctant at first to ride one, she was impressed by these remarkable machines. When Cindy told Shane about her fantastic experience, he searched on line to find somewhere to do it in South Australia, and we were surprised to discover that there were no similar tours available in our own state, and thought it would be a great business to start.
Why do you like what you do?
We love what we do because the segways are fun, easy and anyone can ride them, it is very rewarding to see peoples faces once they have come back from a tour. our motto is “It’s Wheelie Good Fun”.
What have been some of the challenges?
The greatest challenge has been changing the legislation to allow Segways to operate in the public arena, as they are classed as a vehicle. It took two and a half years for this to happen and we now are able to work with council to a designated route to be able to offer to locals, and holiday makers a unique way to see our beautiful iconic locations, Adelaide Riverbank and Seppeltsfield Winery.
Any tips you have for people thinking about a ‘second career’?
Certainly do your research, but follow your dream and passions when you love what you do it makes it worth while for everyone.
What are your views on ‘retirement’ ?
You would want to believe that once you have retired you can then start to enjoy all the things in life that you were unable to do because of work. It is still very important to stay healthy, fit and above all active and happy.
