Retirement is a major life event that presents many opportunities. It’s also a time to seize the opportunities and, for some, even think about moving. Reasons for relocating in retirement are as varied as retirees. Some people decide to stay in one spot, while others move to new locations.

We’ve met many retirees around Australia when researching for editions of Where To Retire In Australia. Here are just some of the reasons people move in retirement.

Your Home No Longer Fits Your Needs

A home’s once perfect size and characteristics may not be as appropriate in retirement over time. Moving to a home that is easier to maintain, or one with simpler access may be preferable. Maintaining a large family home may become time consuming and expensive. Relocating to a more useful residence or downsizing may be an option for some.

Nearer Healthcare Facilities

As people get older, healthcare becomes particularly important. Many retirees choose to move to places with easier access to healthcare facilities. Being close to clinics, hospitals, and experts can play a major role in ensuring that health is maintained and treatment is available. Checking out how many doctors and specialists live and practice in an area is important- before moving.

Nearer Transport

The flexibility to travel and explore is generally one of retirement’s benefits. Retirees who live near airports, public transportation hubs, or roads may find it simpler to visit friends and family and go on adventures. Being able to travel independently may also be crucial.

The Neighbourhood Has Changed

Over time, communities change, and the neighborhood people are used to may go through changes that no longer suit their tastes. Retirees may look for a better place to live due to factors including rising crime rates, pollution, noise and development. We’ve all heard of the various acronyms that describe areas (Yuppies, for example).

Climate

People frequently grow to favour a milder climate as they get older for their health and wellbeing. Severe winters and high heat can be physically taxing, which is why retirees may go to areas with milder climates. A favourable climate can promote outdoor activities and socialisation. Although I know of many retirees who just wanted warmer weather.

Socialisation

Although retirement frequently means having more free time, for some people it might also mean feeling alone. Some retirees choose to settle in active retirement communities or communities with a built-in social network. With such a move, they may socialise more and lead an active lifestyle. Other retirees search for specific neighbourhoods within a city or town that offer greater socialising options.

Closer To Sporting Facilities and Entertainment

To make it easier for them to engage in their preferred activities, some retirees decide to move closer to sports and entertainment facilities. This move provides convenient access to entertainment and recreational activities, such as being close to a professional sports stadium, a golf club, or a bustling cultural scene.

Desire To Build

The desire to construct their ideal home is also a reason that retirees move. They can design a home that precisely matches their tastes and requirements for their retirement. Whether it’s a beachfront villa, an urban unit or a quaint cottage in the countryside, building a house in retirement can allow retirees to customise their home, with features they want.
