Many people do not do the ‘right’ research in looking for a great retirement location. Having a great holiday/s in a location is not an ideal reason for moving to an area. Nor is thinking that ‘everything will be o.k.’ if we move to an area….nor is being seduced by warmer temperatures or glossy real estate advertisements!

ONE of the biggest land releases in recent times at Lennox Head is now before the State Government for approval. The Pacific Pines residential subdivision is expected, on approval, to bring an extra 1750 residents to the village, living in 480 homes in a mix of residential lots, duplexes and small affordable housing. The development also is to provide 310 retirement units with a maximum height of three storeys.

Whilst listening to the radio very early one morning, I became increasingly interested in an interview with Patti Miller, the author of a number books including The Memoir Book, Child, Whatever The Gods Do, The Last One Who Remembers and Writing Your Life. She is an established writer and ‘Australia’s most experienced life–writing teacher’.
It was a most enlightening and interesting interview. For many people the mere thought of writing about their Life Experiences is daunting. However, Patti said creating a ‘patchwork’ of stories is far easier than sitting down to write a huge book! Even at that hour, there must have been people around Australia, inspired to ‘get writing’!
During the interview Patti gave many tips, and also suggested that people could start by drawing a plan of their childhood home and ‘going’ in their mind to each room to write about experiences and events.
The workshops that Patti conducts are around Australia as well as in locations such as Fiji and Paris! What a great way of travelling with a ‘purpose’.
Patti says, ‘Life writing is inclusive. Everyone has a story of his or her own experience of being in the world. Whatever your achievements or challenges or pain, your story is worth telling - and worth telling in a powerful and absorbing way.
Time after time, the thousands of Life Stories I have read and worked on reveal that each individual being is miraculous and unique, and that at the same time we share so much as we travel through our lives’
And Patti’s thoughts on retirement?
‘I did remark the other day, that I can't imagine I would ever retire because writing is my life. It's not just what I do, but in large part, what I am. A writer never stops considering what it is like to be a human being in this puzzling world. To stop writing would be like deciding to stop breathing’
