Nude Protest Sparks Comment Worldwide

 Tweed Daily News

Residents who peeled their gear off to star in a naked protest video have aroused the attention of media across the world - and they're set to do it again.

Since the Tweed Daily News broke the story of on its front page on Tuesday, the plight of Hastings Point residents opposed to "inappropriate development" in their coastal village has been picked up by national newspapers, television shows and internet chatrooms.

Now the angry protesters who posted the cheeky video on video sharing website YouTube are set to shoot a second video.

John O'Reilly, the campaign's spokesman and a local solicitor, said campaigners were thinking of increasing the pressure on the council with yet another video, and once again it would be "something a bit different".

Mr O'Reilly said the world was now listening and campaigners wanted Tweed Shire Council, which recently approved two fiercely-opposed three-storey projects, to take notice.

"People know what's right," he said.

"You've just got to jump on YouTube and look at some of the comments.

"We just want to be heard. Not only is the community opposed to these developments, the law says it shouldn't be this way."

Residents from toddlers to retirees stripped off for the protest video to tell the naked truth about their opposition to "inappropriate development".Their YouTube site has scored hits from around the world. A surf-shop owner in California was so enraged by council approval of controversial development he emailed the Save Hasting Point campaign, offering two surfboards to raise funds for the continuing legal battle.Mr O'Reilly yesterday said the surf-shop owner had told him he had been to Hastings Point and was shocked to hear about the development approved by Tweed Shire Council."We are getting hits from all over the world," he said. Since the Tweed Daily News ran the story it has been picked up by The Courier-Mail in Queensland, Channel 10 news, news.com.au, and Fox News. Both the Seven network's Morning Show and Nine network's Today Show have sought interviews with some of the naked campaigners, which are expected to be broadcast on air this morning.
